Vicar General Edward John Gordon,  was born in 1791 in Dublin. In 1829 he was ordained Rev. Gordon, at St. Paul's, in Upper Canada.

Reverend Edward died in 1870 in Hamilton and as he was the Roman Catholic Vicar General to the Bishop, he is buried in the vault at St. Mary's Cathedral.

His charity and good will proved itself when he accommodated and assisted the Irish immigrants from their famine.  In 1847 he served as a member of the Hamilton  Board of Trustees, and in 1851 he became Vicar General to Bishop Armand de Chabonnel. Reverend Edward John Gordon is also credited with bringing the Sisters of St. Joseph from Toronto to Hamilton in 1852.
