A rank is a row of pipes with
between 61 and 74 pipes in a typical pipe organ. Each black and white
key on the organ console has a corresponding pipe connected to that key
which sounds when the key is pressed. Thus each of the 11 rows of pipes
offers a different sound therefore giving the rich full sound of the
organ. The wooden pipes are Flue pipes, the metal pipes are Principle
pipes and the organ contains 2 ranks of Reed pipes which are flared pipes
that bell out like trumpets. The 8' Dulcian rank was imported from
Germany specifically for the organ. The wooden pipes visible at the
corners of the organ are a major component of the bass tone of the
organ.
